I’ve been really impressed with your ability to mentor/coach/assist with other engineers since we’ve worked together, in particular the support you’ve given junior engineers

Your work on the Key SSIS package and Data Quality work was of a high standard and you did it mostly independently, taking on large tasks without needing support

You always give good feedback and recommendations, particularly when it comes to SQL tasks

You’re a good communicator and express yourself clearly to others in the team, including when you’re uphappy with the workload

Despite you mentioning your challenges with dyslexia, your documentation is of a good standard. I liked the CDC Net Changes one you shared recently.

I think this would be a good thing to continue to focus on going forward as it’s something we do a lot of in the team

Thanks for all your support this year!

You've been a great teacher and mentor throughout the ups and downs we've had to endure these past few months.

Sad that we are no longer on the same direct team but I am sure you are a huge asset to Star Fish,

and I am glad the two new teams are still connected.

I’ve had the pleasure to work with Carl since March 2023, working on the EMD product, focusing on the design and development of solutions using SQL Server (and associated Microsoft products).

What is very evident to me daily is the passion that Carl has for technology and finding the best solution to meet the needs of the business. Whilst using the knowledge he’s gained during his career to date, Carl is also open to open to new approaches and developing his technical skills further. This is a something that benefits the quality of the product as well as personal development and I’d encourage Carl to continue with this approach. It’s good to look beyond your own comfort zone.

One of the most impressive observations I have with Carl is his openness with others that he’s working on. I’ve valued Carl’s contributions to team discussions. They are always considered, and evidence based, which helps focus discussions on the matter in hand. He often uses code POCs too to demonstrate his point of view and plays to his strengths.

On a similar note, I think Carl is a role model on his approach to adapting his own personal ways of working to face into the challenges that he can experience with Dyslexia. In a safe environment, Carl has been open with others about what works best for him and gives examples of situations that are more testing. It takes courage to share a vulnerability with other but the outcome for both Carl and to the wider team is very positive in my view. As a direct result of Carl sharing his own person experience, I’ve tried to learn more about Dyslexia and adapted my style of communication with the team to ensure that it’s 100% inclusive for all members of the team.

So, in summary, it’s been a very positive experience working with Carl. I think there are two things for him to consider going forward in his career. Firstly, I’d ask him to embrace the superpowers that Dyslexia gives him. Seeing the bigger picture, recognising complex patterns in images, thinking in pictures, creativity and problem solving are key skills of all Engineers. Secondly, I’d encourage Carl to explore how he can develop his soft skills. Being an Engineer is not 100% coding and I think there’s great potential for Carl with skills that he’s yet to discover.

Carl has a great deal to give to any team he’s a member of and I’d welcome the opportunity to work together again in the future.

In the few months I have been line manging Carl, he is great team player. He is very supportive of his team and volunteering for additional tasks. From the feedbacks from his colleagues and prides it is evident that Carl is the go-to person to help with technical queries.

He has recently joined EMD, where he has actively participated and volunteered to lead presentations at meeting on proof of concept for temporal table.

He has involved in involved in wider community activities, ran the Q3 DDF Event with very positive feedback.

He is always keen to learn and upskill in different technologies by participating in AWS away days, taking his time out on his personal projects over various technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, hosting and deploying websites.

He has already started looking towards his long term goals of E3 and potential of people management as a positive step towards his career.

In summary Carl is a joy to work with and is highly effective engineer who always want to give his best.

In the few months Carl was under my line management team, he was always very friendly and professional.

Carl is ambitious and has a great attitude towards self development, he worked hard to secure his E2 promotion.

He stepped up to help organise and run away days and has made suggestions to help with content for subsequent events. He’s not afraid to be vocal in meetings and make improvements where needed.

Now he is establishing himself as a great Engineer, it would be good to see Carl get more involved in things outside his role like coaching and mentoring, Engineering initiatives, volunteering days, Employee Network activity to widen his experience within the Society and raise his profile.

Overall Carl is on the right track for success and was a pleasure to have him on the team. I wish him every success in his new role.

Carl joined FBI as an E1 engineer in early 2022. Whilst being a skilled SQL engineer he was new to D&A and our data estate. This didn’t deter him and he took time to research information and learn about our data estate and data flows. He engaged with others and sought to educate himself.

Once he had settled into the team he worked on FSCS Remediation alongside an E2 colleague and Infosys colleagues. This was a very high priority delivery within D&A on the radar of Simone. It was clear early on that Carl was the driving force behind this delivery and the defacto lead. He chaired the daily shouts and set the tempo of change delivery despite being junior in grade. Carl is a very motivated self-starter who is passionate about doing the best job possible and ensuring we deliver right first time solutions . This was evidenced within ****** where he constructively challenged the solution delivery, offering a more strategic solution approach to remediate the audit action. He did this in a very calm, professional and articulate manner, providing evidence to support his recommendation.

Carl, whilst being a self-confessed quite shy individual is also a people person and challenges himself to get involved in wider community activities. Testament to this is the fact that he, alongside another E1 engineer colleague, organised, managed, communicated and ran the Q3 DDF Event which received very positive feedback.

Carl’s ability, skills and knowledge have been recognised through his promotion to E2 within a year of joining Nationwide.

In summary Carl is a highly effective engineer who always want to give his best. He was an asset to FBI and I was personally proud to have him as a colleague delivering high quality change.

You are a definite team player, always ready to help and educate in code analysis work we have done together, we did lots of code for the ****** project, you have a patient and methodical approach in teaching someone code and your clearly enthusiastic about mentoring and teaching, I have learned a great deal from you, that the work I do now, has come along leaps and bounds and it’s been wonderful to be able to share my logical conclusions of how I completed a task. I have never felt judged or intimidated to talk to you about technical work as I have been very self-aware of how little I know compared to others. But you have always ensured there is an open, non-judgmental and approachable environment

In whichever team you go in, I know that you are always a keen team player, attending events and team days, your approach to supporting the technical side for the Q3 event was efficient and from the feedback we received people were very happy that they could engage in activities with ease online.

Continue to create a comfortable environment, I would endorse you as teacher, as my SQL skills were almost at 0 when I had rolled off the TDP programme, although hard work is important from my end, it’s also important that those like me can approach someone and have work peer-reviewed or shown different solutions to approach a task, which you have done many times with success.

Things you have introduced me to, to aid my SQL skills have been Azure data studio and Notepad++

You are confident with your ideas and skills, and your attitude in work and outside work is that of consistent improvement, it has been amazing to see the 3d builds that you make, how you also built your own office and generally you are someone who has a genuine investment in the betterment of not just yourself but others too.

I have only recently taken over Line Management but it's been great getting to know Carl over the past few weeks and getting an understanding of the things he is working on

Carl is making good progress against his goals, is working hard towards a promotion to an E2 role and has been proactive in finding ways to overcome some of the challenges he has faced.

I look forward to seeing what he will achieve in the performance year and will support him to make it a great success

A really great start to your career at Nationwide. I am already hearing really positive feedback from leaders within D&A..

Its great to see you getting involved in value stream initiatives like the influencer groups, this will help you to build relationships across the team and give you a view of D&A outside of the FBI pod.

Keep up the great work and I wish you all the best for the next financial year. Thanks for all your efforts up to now.
